The Central Karnataka Region

The Central Karnataka Region is the hottest and driest part of the state, made up of 10 central districts that stretch from the Arabian Sea in the west to Andhra Pradesh in the east. More than 65 percent of its 18 million inhabitants rely on agriculture for their livelihood and are largely dependent on the annual monsoon rains for water. Unfortunately, the region has the state’s lowest rainfall amounts.

Central Karnataka’s people live in more than 5,200 villages and 69 towns and cities. Those who are not farmers work in agricultural-based industries, such as manufacturing and exporting cotton and silk clothes. Others work in mines, tapping into the region’s gold, copper and iron ore deposits.
