The Dhemaji Assam Region
The Dhemaji Region includes three districts in the state of Assam state and an adjoining district from Arunachal Pradesh that was formerly part of Assam. The region’s 571,000 people live in more than 2,000 villages. They all suffer during the frequent flooding around the Brahmaputra River.
Largely an agricultural area, there is little industrial or commercial development, and the people are almost entirely dependent on the land for their livelihood.
The major indigenous people group in the area is the Mising tribe, whose people are known for their colorful dress and distinctive music. Visiting their villages is difficult because the Mising tend to live deep in the jungles, where transportation is very limited and access is dangerous.
