The Siliguri Jaigaon Region is known as “the Diamond of the Northeast.” It is the tourist and commercial center of the state, and a main road running through it connects all the northeast states of India to several small surrounding countries.
There are three main people groups here, each with different religious beliefs, styles of dress and social conditions. Some work in the cities, while the main population works on farms and in tea gardens. Some tea plantations have closed in this region, leaving many unable to provide for their families.
There have been power struggles and political tensions in this region between people groups.
Transportation is difficult in this region because it is very limited and expensive. In addition, high hills and frequent landslides make journeys treacherous.
